Consonances

workshop of polyphonic singing and working with voice

27 – 28 April 2019

Singing together, letting the soft shades of what we have inside us rise to the surface with voice. Truthfully put in it our every state, just as it is: grief, restlessness, joy, anger, desire, intimacy. Starting to put voice, one of the most intimate things we have, into a common space. Being together in softness and intensity. Listen to each other and sound together with someone. The voices resonate, creating harmony – something we wouldn’t create ourselves. A whole that is more than the sum of the parts.

When we sing together, there is full attention, gentle listening and trust. We let the voice flow, letting the stream to form, the river of sounds that carries and takes us on a journey. We mix our voice with voices of others much like gourmets, who fine-tune the taste of food with various ingredients. Something that transcends us is being created. The harmony that touches us, which deeply feeds the heart.

Working with the voice itself opens a new relationship to one’s own voice, exploring, discovering, playful and allowing almost anything. There will be exercises directly focused on the art of resonating and tuning. We will hone sensitivity in listening and sensitivity in the use of voice. We will also learn several songs in multiple voices from Bulgaria, Iceland, Georgia and Turkey.

In free jamming, we realize what is happening in singing together. For example, how harmony changes when we change the way we use the voice (throat or head, open and closed vocals, individual vowels, high and low, quiet and loud, long and short tones). Or how communication and collaboration (answering, building on, filling in, delivering what is missing – rhythm, dynamics, silence, contrasting, bass lines for someone’s high tones, spaces for solo, the art of giving space and taking space). We will also notice where our attention is and how it affects our common singing. How to sing with the intention of imagery, to create atmospheres and landscapes.

This workshop is for joy and it is not necessary to have talent, to have any skills, to be able manage anything. It is for all who have ever wanted to sing together, to experience the sense of searching and harmony, to touch it, to break into alchemy of harmony. The quality of being together will be important, and so we will care that everyone gets the time and support and exactly the challenge that moves him forward.

Pavla Kopřivová

singer – lecturer – performer

„Wherever I went, I always asked people about their songs and learned them from them. So I carry a collection in my head and share it wherever I go. It connects people.
For about a third of my life, I was intensively learning the art of singing with various teachers, also at the conservatory. But I became more interested in singing together, because there is something extraordinary going on that is charging me and is like food to me. Over the past few years, I’ve guided quite many people who have chosen to discover their voice. It was fascinating and beautiful. I put it all together and started to lead singing circles. Voice is one of the strongest tools to connect people. Through it, the needs of intimacy, sharing, communion can be satiated. Therefore, I want to create a space where we can rediscover this beautiful old way of co-existence.“

The workshop is intensive: Saturday and Sunday 10:00 – 18:00.

Price 120 EUR. To book a place the deposit of 40 EUR must be payed in advance.
