Everything and Nothing - metamorphosing body-mind

Butoh dance workshop – Motimaru Dance Company

weekend 8 – 9 June

This workshop of butoh dance is an invitation for diving into the unknown forest of our body and mind, discovering unlimited movements and textures within us. Our body and mind contain a whole universe. We want to initiate you into art by facilitating access to your body, mind and creation through them. In your dance you can then feel your personal experience transforming into universal poem.

100,000 years ago, when Homo sapiens emerged on this planet, the first human art has emerged in the dark cave, where eyes cannot see. What they were seeing with the eyes of the body-mind is the depth of our unconscious. Times change, but this must be a fundamental principle of human art.

The aim of this workshop is an enhanced and broadened perception of space inside and outside the body. Understanding and using the anatomy of your body at the finest qualitative level. We will study the relationship between body and mind, learning how to control the quality of body, mind, and space in their different parts.

Each workshop has its own original content, always a bit different from previous workshops, however the main structure of the workshop is based on four stages:

  • 1st part: whitening – return to neutral body and mind. Begins with yoga asanas, continues with scanning the body and expanding space.
  • 2nd part: basic moves. Standing, walking, twisting, staying and sinking, falling and getting up, creation with different parts of the body (hands, eyes, back, arms, legs)
  • 3rd part: physical level change that interferes with the quality and texture of the body. Transformation at a meta-physical level such as the embodying of sounds and the embodying of visual images: natural elements, paintings and film images
  • 4th part: creation. Playing with a partner or group playing, playing with an object, discovering a relationship with music, with costume and with objects. How to enter space and how disappear from it. Composition and structured improvisation.

Motoya Kondo (Japan) and Tiziana Longa (Italy)

Motimaru Dance Company

The Motimaru Dance Company was founded in Tokyo by two dancers who trained in the Kazuo Ohno Butoh Dance studio. Both Motoya Kondo (Japan) and Tiziana Longa (Italy) studied for five years under Yoshita Ohna, the son of Kazua Ohna, and worked as dancers and stage assistants. They also went through training with well-known butoh dancers: Tomiko Takai; Yukio Waguri, Mitsuyo Uesugi, Kayo Mikami, Seisaku, Torifune. Since 2010 they live in Berlin.

Motimaru follows a continuous line of art that has roots in nature and goes across cultures. Looking for intersections between ancient and modern. They define dance as a way to experience the deeper reality of our existence and experiment with creating a new authentic dance method beyond any genre. Their background is in performing arts, modern dance and martial arts. They convey the substance of butoh as an essence that can be transferred to the contemporary directions.
