Butoh - Dance Caligraphy

weekend 25 – 26 June 2022

„A single splendour stroke instead of hundreds of movements“

Workshop of Japanese Butoh dance art takes us into the vast space of human body transformations. A dance in which we are captivated by pure form, filled with experience. The purity of the movement, which is not formal and is associated with a real being. You will learn how to experience the reality of your body and your mind, which contains the whole world. You will find that everything can be expressed in dance. The core of the work comes from practice of the Kazuo Ohno style.

When we come across a masterpiece of a Japanese tea bowl, it is so quiet, ordinary, it does not express anything or last, yet we find the whole universe in a single bowl. Rich patterns and flashy shapes can often overshadow the inherent essence…

Instead of hundreds of graceful lines of movement, we will explore one wonderful stroke. A single stroke – a movement that expands into the vast space. A stroke that leads us to recognize peace behind movement. A stroke that is filled with the original inherent wealth of existence and transcends mere emotional and sentimental confessions.

In search of the essence of existence, in search of space behind the movement of body and mind, let the wind dance in the sky.

Structure of the workshop:

  • Preparing body to be an objective object
  • Exploring external anatomy and movement principles
  • Exploring contemplative anatomy and movement principles
  • Connecting breath and body
  • Using different textures of the movement
  • Deconstructing the concept of time
  • Reconnecting with silent space in the midst of the movement
  • Improvisation

Dancers, actors, artists from any field and anyone interested in uncovering the layers of the body are welcome. No previous experience is required. You can participate regardless of age.
